Food Waste Resource Directory

One of the core missions of Budgeat is to reduce food waste. That’s why we’ve created the Food Waste Resource Directory to connect individuals with high quality information and resources on Food Waste and Loss. As we continue to find new sources of information and resources we’ll update the directory periodically to include them. Government Agency Resources

  1. EPA Sustainable Management of Food: Environmental Protection Agency's hub for food waste information. Includes info to help understand the issues as well as recommendations for individuals and communities.
  2. StopFoodWaste.org: Alameda County, California's website is filled with loads of practical resources and guides.
  3. FDA Food Loss and Waste: U.S. Food and Drug Administration's page describing the interagency collaboration between the USDA, FDA, EPA, and ReFed Inc. to reduce food waste in the U.S. This page also includes links to resources from each of the agencies. 
  4. USDA Food Waste FAQ Page: United States Department of Agriculture overview of food waste in the U.S. and ongoing governmental efforts to reduce food waste
  5. European Union Food Loss and Waste Prevention Hub: EU hub on food loss and waste, including a database of resources, news and events, and information on the efforts of member states
  6. UN Environment Programme Food Waste Index Report: UNEP hallmark report presenting a comprehensive overview of available data and analysis, inclusive of suggested methodologies for countries to measure food waste.
  7. Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Food Loss and Waste Hub: The FAO hub on the food loss and waste issue. Includes links to various related ongoing efforts and publications

Non Governmental Organization (NGO) Resources

  1. ReFed.org: U.S. focused NGO. Provides a plethora of high quality datasets, proposed solutions, facts and figures, and more. Collaborates with multiple governmental agencies. Maintains the "Insights Engine" which is "a data and solutions hub for food loss and waste."
  2. FoodPrint.org Food Waste Overview: Fact and figure intensive overview of the food loss and waste issue in the U.S. Very effective introduction to the food loss and waste issue 
  3. National Resource Defense Council: Overview of the global food loss and waste issue and a compendium of statistics and related resources.
  4. The Global FoodBanking Network: Overview of the global food loss and waste issue and how food banks can play a role in addressing this issue
  5. SaveTheFood.com: Collaboration between the NRDC and Ad Council to provide resources for individuals to reduce food waste in their homes
  6. Love Food Hate Waste: Food waste reduction hub of the U.K. based non-profit Waste and Resources Action Council
  7. Food Rescue US: Nonprofit organization focused on connecting entities with excess food with organizations in need of food donations
  8. Food Rescue Locator: Description provided: "This directory of organizations across the United States serves as a resource for individuals and groups to find food recovery organizations to which they can donate excess food, or support in other ways."

  1. Harvard School of Public Health: Overview of the food loss and waste issue in the U.S. and proposed solutions.
  2. Harvard Food Law & Policy Clinic: Overview of legal and policy efforts aimed at reducing food waste
